90 days in Andalusia: Day 4: Reality Check

Yes, it has come: the reality. So far Jaén has been a leisurely holiday spent shopping, wandering around town, cooking and eating and drinking cider on the balcony. I almost managed to forget what I came here for: the dreaded Thing-Which-Must-Not-Be-Named... the PhD thesis. But merciful denial has reached its end today at 9:00am sharp, as I walked into the (awesome and modern and clean) campus of the Universidad de Jaén, went through the doors of the Edificio D2 (Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educación), ascended to the second floor and entered my thesis supervisor’s office.

Well, to cut the long story short, the first assignment is 20 double-spaced pages, in other words: one substantial, coherent, and structured (as our supervisor, Nieves, put it) subchapter, to be submitted on the 5th of October 2012, yes, next Friday. I must admit that I felt just the slightest pang of panic after agreeing to this arrangement. OK, I completely freaked out! So we ran to the registration office, then we ran to photocopy a photo for the ID card, then we ran to the Biblioteca, where I managed to tell the lady my address and phone number in Spanish (!), and I immediately borrowed the first book at least slightly connected to my thesis I could lay my hands on, and we ran home. And then I did no work. You know, I was really overtired after running from place to place for half the day. So hopefully I will start reading and writing tomorrow. If I don’t have to run anywhere...

Long live procrastination!

Deň 4: Tvrdá realita

Áno, je to tu: nastala realita. Doteraz sme tu v Jaén boli ako na lenivej dovolenke, nakupovali sme, túlali sa len tak po meste, varili a jedli a pili mušt na balkóne. Skoro sa mi podarilo zabudnúť kvôli čomu som sem vlastne prišla: kvôli tej obávanej veci-ktorú-netreba-menovať... dizertačnej práci. Ale dnes presne o 9:00, hneď ako som prekročila brány areálu (krásnej a modernej a čistej) Universidad de Jaén, otvorila dvere Edificio D2 (Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educación), vystúpila po schodoch na druhé poschodie a vošla do kancelárie mojej školiteľky toto milostivé ignorovanie skutočnosti skončilo.

V skratke, naše prvé zadanie znie: napísať 20 strán dvojitým riadkovaním, inými slovami napísať jednu obsažnú, koherentnú a štrukturovanú (ako sa vyjadrila Nieves, naša školiteľka) podkapitolu, ktorú treba odovzdať piateho októbra, áno, budúci piatok. Musím priznať, že som pocítila jemný záchvev paniky, keď som pristúpila na túto dohodu. Vlastne, úplne som sa zosypala! Takže sme bežali na administratívne oddelenie, potom sme si utekali okopírovať fotky na študentské preukazy, bežali sme do Bibliotec-y, kde sa mi podarilo pani za pultom nadiktovať svoju adresu a telefónne číslo po španielsky (!), a okamžite som si vypožičala prvú knihu aspon trochu súvisiacu s mojou témou, ktorú som zbadala, a utekali sme domov. A potom som nič nenapísala. To viete, po všetkom tom behaní z miesta na miesto som bola dosť vyčerpaná. Takže snáď začnem čítať a písať zajtra. Teda, ak nebudem musieť nikam utekať...

Načo by som robila dnes to, čo si môžem nechať na zajtra, no nie?
